Have you ever watched someone being bullied or have you ever been the target of bullying yourself? Our usual response to bullying is to fight back, run away, or ignore it and try to be the better person while the bully has their way.

But what if you knew of another alternative? One that didn’t invite more aggression…one that puts you in control of the situation so that you do not lose face in front of peers…one that helps you diffuse or even handle the bully outright while you stand your ground?

In this book you are going to learn:

  • How not to think or react like a victim
  • How to stand up for yourself if you are an intended target of bullying or violence
  • How to stand up for others as the bystander
  • How to break the cycle of self-sabotage that causes aggressive behavior or bullying

If you have children in school—
If you are a teacher, school administrator, or someone that plays a role in the life of a child—
If you have ever felt hopeless and out of options—
If you want to know how to be assertive without being violent, this book is definitely for you.
Put control back into your life. Learn to be an assertive, effective Hero!

One mother with a teenage boy said “Gods, Gloves, Popups, and Ponies” was like a manual for her son! Baseball dazzles us with its complexity and beauty but also for its ability to mirror so much of the human spirit. The ups and downs of the game along with its style and grace have forever been a source of inspiration to baseball fans and especially to the young people of this country. Gods, Gloves, Popups, and Ponies explores the effect baseball can have on the development of a young man’s path to manhood. It is first about how a young man discovers what it means to be awakened from the fog of his adolescent life in his life-changing summer chasing the Pony League title in 1975. It then brings the story to the present moment as we learn how baseball can help shape a young man’s character as the young boy is now a coach and we are taken through a season with the high school-baseball players he helps guide and direct. Through his many years allowing the game of baseball to mold and define his character the author brings to us a rare look at just how powerful the lessons found on the field can be to the creation of outstanding young men.

“Different” Should Never be Limiting!

A child is a world of potential, and it doesn’t matter if that child has something that limits them physically or mentally. They should be encouraged to succeed in life, just like any other “normal” person.

But how do you do that? John Hendry, in Held Back by Nothing, tells us how through the story of his youngest son, Steven. Born with cerebral palsy, Steven could have been a victim, but with his natural verve for life coupled with parents who never said “never,” Steven beat all the odds. He lives an amazing life by any standards.

If you’re the parent of a child with special needs, Hendry will help you discover his or her uniquely normal potential. While the book relates Steven’s exploits growing up, it is also chock full of helpful hints for parents in need of guidance and inspiration for their own “uniquely normal” child:

  • how to negotiate the school system
  • what to expect from various organizations
  • how to handle the inevitable discrimination.

Just Keep Breathing

My husband has AIDS. I miraculously don’t. How am I going to survive? …I try to keep from screaming, “Dennis, you can’t do this to me now. I left my family, my friends, my job, pulled the kids away from their school and friends—you can’t quit on us. You can’t.”

Through clenched teeth, he controls his response, “Scott, I’m tired. I’m dying.” Dennis is walking away and does not sound tired; he sounds angry.

“Have you not heard anything I’ve told you for the last twenty-three years? I love you; you are my life. Don’t you dare think I’m not dying here, too. You may be the one who gets buried, but I’m the one who has to figure out how to keep living. I’m dying, Dennis; I’m dying with you.”

We stand there, energy spent, emotionally depleted, tears falling. I take him in my arms, and we hold on to each other as if we draw life’s breath from the other—because we do.

He sits on the sofa, and I go find the Dallas phone book so I can call Restland, the place where we will bury his body.
When Joan Scott Curtis was 43 years old, she found out her husband was dying of AIDS. He had been infected for thirteen years. She tested negative. None of this was possible.

It was the mid 1990s. All the prejudices about AIDS are not supposed to exist anymore, but they do. Just Keep Breathing is the remarkable story about finding courage in small victories, on taking solace in helping others, and knowing that even though the major battle will be lost, the ability to live on with grace and dignity is what defines the war.
