Gov. Charlie Baker signed a bill Wednesday to legalize sports betting, officially joining a wave of states that allowed betting on everything from the Super Bowl to college track and field, after the Supreme Court lifted a federal ban in 2018. In 2011, lawmakers signed the Expanded Gaming Act into Massachusetts gambling laws. The legislation allows up to four commercial casinos to operate in the state. It is a casino complex in each of the three regions of the state, as well as a slot machine lounge throughout the state. The existing Plainridge Park racetrack added slot machines in June 2015 and became the Plainridge Park Casino. MGM Springfield opened in August 2018 and was the first casino in Massachusetts to offer live table games. This was followed by the opening of Encore Boston Harbor in June 2019. Approval was granted for the opening of a third casino complex in Taunton, which operates under the tribal state`s agreement with the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe.
